[STUDIO GHIBLI] THE FILMOGRAPHY OF HAYAO MIYAZAKI
INTRODUCTION: The most prominent of all anime directors and arguably the most internationally recognized amongst Japanese filmmakers today, Hayao Miyazaki has firmly established himself as one of the greatest storytellers to use the film medium. His contributions to the Studio Ghibli canon are diverse in tone and address numerous issues concerning childhood innocence, the path to maturity, and the power of nature in harmony with humanity; most feature a young girl or woman as the protagonist and all boast breath-taking animation and soul-stirring background scores. From the extraordinarily gentle and light-hearted My Neighbor Totoro to the gritty, heart-stopping majesty of Princess Mononoke to the near-perfect film that at last caught the attention of the West, Spirited Away, each of Miyazaki’s works are universally appealing and meticulously crafted. To watch one of his films is to appreciate and to enjoy only a fraction of the immense talent spread out in a career spanning some 50 odd years; all of the feature films Miyazaki has directed under the Studio Ghibli banner are masterpieces you will enjoy watching over and over again.
